Yuvraj's Cup hopes doubtful

Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh is considered only an outside chance of playing in next year's World Cup after the all-rounder succumbed to a torn ligament in his knee at a team training session.

With the cricket showpiece set to take place in the Caribbean come March 2007, Yuvraj's recovery looks likely to keep him from taking part.

The all-rounder will meet with Indian Cricket Board surgeon Anant Joshi next week for further assessment and he is expected to require a knee reconstruction.

"My understanding is he will have to undergo surgery as the torn ligament needs to be reconstructed," team physio Andrew Leipus told the BBC.

"It will be touch and go for the World Cup because of the length of time it takes to recover from such an injury."

Widely considered one of India's most talented one-day international players, Yuvraj has scored almost 4,300 runs, including seven centuries, in 159 appearances.

The injury occurred while he was preparing for India's recent Champions Trophy loss to Australia and he has already been ruled out of his country's subsequent tour to South Africa.
