State Twenty20 opens summer

A State Twenty20 knockout tournament is to be hosted by Southland Cricket in Invercargill in November to begin the men’s State Summer of Cricket, New Zealand Cricket announced today.

Major Association teams will compete in the tournament which will be held from November 10 to November 12, at Queens Park and Southland Boys High School, with the winning team taking home a $30,000 prize.

“Southland Cricket initiated the tournament with the backing of the Invercargill Licensing Trust after approaching NZC with a proposal earlier this year,” NZC CEO Martin Snedden said today.

“Domestic Twenty20 cricket had a great start last season and we hope that this knockout tournament will help build on that success.

“The tournament will give the cricket season an exciting start and the tournament is expected to create a lot of interest in Southland.

“Southland Cricket has put a lot of hard work into securing funding and support for the event and we expect that it will be a success,” he said.

The tournament begins on Friday November 10. Each venue will host a semi-final on Sunday November 12, with the final taking place at the recently redeveloped Queens Park at 3pm.

An expanded State Twenty20 tournament will take place during the season, as previously announced.
