Williamson sets up historic series win

Kane Williamson struck a remarkable unbeaten century to propel the BLACKCAPS to a brilliant victory in the second one-day international at the Diamond Oval on Tuesday.

Williamson’s stroke-filled 145 off 136 deliveries was the cornerstone of the visitors 279 for eight, helping set up the 27 runs win and provide an unassailable 2-0 series lead

The young batsmen achieved the highest individual score by a BLACKCAP against South Africa bettering Stephen Fleming's 134 not-out in Johannesburg in February 2003.

He found a willing ally in Grant Elliott (48) with the pair putting on 127 for the third wicket after New Zealand made a sluggish start l,osing Martin Guptill without scoring and BJ Watling for just 12.

It is the first series win by a New Zealnd team in South Africa in any format after the team completed a thrilling one wicket win in Paarl two days ago.

South Africa couldn’t back up the contributions by Graeme Smith (66) and Colin Ingram (79) with the home team falling from 167 for one to 252 all out in the final over.

Half of the home team were undone but a superb fielding effort with the BLACKCAPS completing a record equalling five run-outs, including two in successive overs after the home team looked to be crusing.

The final match is played in Potchefstroom on Friday 25 January.
