The Otago Volts iced an outstanding HRV Cup Twenty20 debut by teenager Jacob Duffy by beating the Northern Knights by nine wickets in Hamilton today.
International Brendon McCullum and Neil Broom celebrated Duffy’s arrival on the scene by belting a record, unbroken second wicket stand of 188 as the Volts cruised past the Knights’ 187 for five with 16 balls to spare at Seddon Park.
It was the biggest second wicket stand in domestic Twenty20 history.
McCullum was at his belligerent best in belting 103 not out off 54 balls while Broom prospered with 79 not out of 50 as the southerners made light work of their target.
Southland Boys High School student Duffy, 17, earlier marked his first appearance in the competition with an outstanding return of three for 19 off four overs operating with the new ball as the Knights were reduced to 58 for three off their opening 10 overs.
The experienced pair of Hamish Marshall, with 86 not out off 45, with eight fours and four sixes, and Scott Styris, who made 45 off 24, repaired the damaged in a partnership of 93 before Peter McGlashan whacked 22 off nine to give the hosts something to defend.
Right-arm medium-fast bowler Duffy, who impressed greatly as he generated good pace and bounce, eased his nerves with a double wicket maiden in the third over when he induced top edges from makeshift opener Tim Southee and Kane Williamson.
McCullum and Broom later ensured his fine work was not wasted after the dismissal of opener Hamish Rutherford, who was run out without facing a ball.
Thereafter, McCullum and Broom controlled proceedings with a calculated approach as they mixed caution with carefree strokeplay, particularly McCullum, who struck eight sixes and seven fours, while Broom was hardly a wallflower himself in hitting fours sixes and eight fours.
