Pulford and Browne Lead the Norhtern Spirit to Victory

The State Northern Spirit recovered from yesterday's loss to beat the State Auckland Hearts by six wickets in their final match of the State League at Cobham Oval in Whangarei.

Auckland were put into bat and could only manage 160 as the Northern bowlers were tight and accurate.

Contributions came from Ros Kember 32, Samantha Barriball 37 and Wendy Horneman 41 but it was partnerships the team needed and were unable to build.

Nicola Browne returned staggering figures of three for 12 off nine overs, including four maiden.

Kate Pulford celebrated her recall to the White Ferns with a stellar all round performance taking three for 25 with the new ball and hitting 50 at the top of the order as the Spirit chased down the target in the 42nd over with six wickets in hand.

Fellow White Fern, Browne backed up her bowling by striking 39 not out to close out the win.

Rosie Cox was the pick of the Auckland attack taking two for 26 off 10.

The result sees the State Northern Spirit lift themselves off the bottom of the table to finish the season in fifth spot.  The loss means the State Auckland Hearts will have the wooden spoon for 2008/09.
