Otago breeze past Central

Otago have cruised to a seven wicket win over Central Districts in a Twenty20 match at the Provincial A tournament in Lincoln.

Needing 133 for victory, the Otago top order took care of things easily and killed the game off after 16.3 overs.

Central decided to bat first but got off to the worst possible start losing Marty Kain first ball of the match.

Ben Smith then came to the wicket and top scored for his side as he played sensibly to make 45 from 42 deliveries.

Helping out at the crease was Greg Todd with 21, Carl Cachopa with 16 and Dane Cleaver with 18. Noticeably these were all starts that that didn’t go anywhere.

That was how it was for much of Central’s innings as they were restricted to 132 for eight at the end of 20 overs.
It was a sub-par total and one decent score from Otago took the game away from Central.

Opener Hamish Rutherford hammered 52 from 35 deliveries to make sure that Otago took away the points.

The rest of the top order made starts and Iain Robertson saw his side home with 17 to make the required runs with seven wickets and 3.3 overs to spare.

Sam Wells deserves special mention as he took three wickets and made 31 for Otago to put a player of the match performance in.
