Master Blaster McCullum Drives Otago to HRV Cup Victory

Master-blaster Brendon McCullum raced to an unbeaten 108 off just 67 balls to rip tonight's HRV Cup match away from the Auckland Aces and set up a two-way leaderboard at the head of the competition points table.

The Aces went into the second innings with a degree of confidence, having posted 168 for 8 wickets off their 20 overs. Scott Styris top-scored with 54 off 44 balls, ably supported by Gareth Hopkins with a quick-fire 25. Ian Butler was easily the pick of the Volts bowlers with 6-28 off his four overs.

However, when McCullum and fellow opener Hamish Rutherford posted 101 for the first wicket, the match was all but over. McCullum was brutal: smashing ten 4s and four 6s on his way to an unbeaten 108.

Aucklander Scott Styris must have wondered what else he had to do to win the match. Having headed the batting line-up he then backed-up with 3/23 with the ball but his efforts were in vain as McCullum wrestled the match into southern hands.

The victory left the Otago Volts trailing the Central Stags at the top of the point table, but with some distance to the contenders.
