The Canterbury Magicians have defended a mediocre total to beat the Central Hinds by 47 runs in the 50-over Action Cricket Cup at Cornwall Park in Hastings.
After losing the toss and being put into bat, the Magicians struggled to put together a meaningful partnership.
Three of their key batsmen Mandie Godliman, Amy Satterthwaite and Janet Brehaut were all dismissed cheaply for a combined total of 12 runs.
Once again the Magicians were saved by young White Fern opener, Francis Mackay. Mackay played maturelyfor her 46, as she watched her teammates fall around her.
When Mackay was finally dismissed by Broadmore, the tail wagged a little for the defending champs thanks to the efforts of Rachel Candy (24) and Jacinta Savage (11).
In the 50th over Canterbury were all out for 140, which included 29 extras.
Broadmore was the chief destroyer for Central returning figures of three for 23 from 9.4 overs. Maneka Singh also bowled well, taking three for 31 from her ten overs.
Hinds’ openers Esther Lanser and Eimear Richardson looked to get their team off on the right foot with 20 for the first wicket before Richardson was dismissed. Captain Rachel Priest (20) was going in the right direction, until she too was fell thanks to some nice bowling from Mackay.
Unfortunately that was the last of the resistance for Central, with no other batsman making double figures. In the 45th over the Magician bowlers finished off a great performance with the ball, bowling out the Hinds for 93.
Kelly Anderson was magnificent for Canterbury picking up three wickets for 11 runs in 8.3 overs. Not to be outdone, Erin Birmingham produced similar figures of three for eight off six overs.
