Women’s One-Day champions, the Canterbury Magicians, have lifted themselves off the bottom of the table after chasing down 282 in a thrilling match against the Northern Spirit at Cobham Oval, Whangarei.
It was the closest of finishes, coming down to the last ball with the Magicians edging out the home team to record their second win of the season.
Northern all rounder Nicola Browne was giving the job of bowling the last over with Canterbury needing just four runs to win. She had a two dot balls and a wicket before new batsman Meg Kendal hit a two and then a single of the last ball to secure the win.
Watching it all unfold from the non-strikers end was Maria Fahey who couldn’t get the strike and remained unbeaten on 56.
Former English international Mandie Godliman set up the run chase with a classy 93 at the top of the order with Magician’s captain Amy Satterthwaite getting a run a ball 44.
Browne took three for 54 with Morna Nielsen picking up two for 52.
Earlier, Northern opener Kate Pulford blasted 130 from just 124 balls to set up the challenging total. Her opening partner Natalie Dodd made 46 as the pair put on a mammoth 164 for the first wicket.
For the Canterbury, Amber Boyce was tidy taking two for 46 with fourth placed MVP Erin Bermingham finishing with two for 56.
The win sees Canterbury swap places with Northern and go into fifth on the table.
