Butler, McCullum star in six wicket win

Nathan McCullum and Ian Butler shared an unbeaten 70 run partnership to steer the Otago Volts to a six wicket win over the Northern Knights at Blake Park, Mt Maunganui.

Chasing 138 for a win built around Anton Devcich’s 37 not out, the Volts pair showed some swift running and big hitting to romp home with seven balls to spare.

Butler arrived at the crease with the match in the balance on 70.  The BLACKCAP international belted a four and two massive sixes and only used 26 balls in his 36 runs.

Nathan McCullum was full of running hitting a run a ball 36.  Younger brother, Brendon, top scored with 47 from 36 at the top of the order before being adjudged LBW off the bowling of Daniel Vettori.

It wasn’t all cut and dry for the visitors with Tim Southee delivering an incredible spell of fast bowling spell, taking wickets in the second, fourth and sixth over to have Otago reeling at 28 for three.  When his overs were complete the pressure eased, allowing the Volts batsman to edge ahead.

Earlier, Devcich top scored for Northern with BJ Watling next best with 28.

Otago part time bowler, Neil Broom took two for 19 with Nick Beard picking up two for 27.
