BLACKCAPS hammer India in opening match

The BLACKCAPS have thrashed India by 200 runs in the first One-Day International match of the tri-series in Dambulla, Sri Lanka.

After winning the toss and electing to bat the BLACKCAPS put on 288 and then bundled India out for just 88 in 29.3 overs.

India had no answer to the deadly accurate BLACKCAPS seam attack as Kyle Mills, Daryl Tuffey, Andy McKay and Jacob Oram ripped through the batting line up in break-neck speed.

Mills set the tone by nicking out Indian blaster Verinda Sehwag early on for 19 before new ball bowling partner Daryl Tuffey accounted for the next three wickets to have the Indians reeling at 50 for four.

When Tuffey had MS Dhoni run out for two and McKay took the prize wicket of Yuvraj Singh for just five the match was as good as gone.

Ravindra Jadeja provided some resistance towards the end of the innings with India’s top score of 20 before he became debutant Kane Williamson’s first ODI scalp.

Oram picked late wickets to finish with two for 15 while Mills polished of the innings to end with two for 26.  Tuffey’s three for 34 was the best with McKay conceded just 11 runs from his six overs.

Earlier, the BLACKCAPS formidable total was set up by a New Zealand record 190 run fourth wicket partnership between captain Ross Taylor and Scott Styris.  The pair surpassed Lee Germon and Chris Harris's 168 from the 1996 World Cup Semi Final.

They came together with the score at 28 for three after Guptill departed for 11, Ingram for 12 and Williamson for a duck.

After getting the BLACKCAPS out of danger the pair set about dispatching the Indian bowling line up to all parts of the ground.

Styris hit nine fours and a six in his 89 while man-of-the-match Taylor struck eight boundaries and six in his 95.

Big hitting Tuffey once again added some fire power down the order with 19 off 18 deliveries.

Opening bowlers Praveen Kumar and Ashish Nehra proved to be best for India taking three for 43 and four for 47 respectively.

The BLACKCAPS play hosts Sri Lanka in their next match match on Thursday 13 August.
