Sir John Anderson

NZC can thank former chairman Sir John Anderson for the ICC future tours programme that helped secure a vibrant and sustainable international playing schedule over the past two decades.
 
Sir John, who passed away on Tuesday, chaired the ICC sub-committee charged with designing an equitable and fair international playing programme, setting in motion a process that resulted in much greater financial security for all ICC members and, with that, a better future for the global game.
 
NZC’s first chairman following the Hood Report changes in 1996, Sir John served in this capacity from 1996 to 2008, automatically becoming an ICC director over the same period.
 
He is remembered with great respect at ICC level, not only for his work on the FTP but also for spearheading a review of the ICC governance and management structures - which led to a more unified, harmonious and streamlined decision-making process for the world game.
 
NZC chairman Greg Barclay said Sir John had an “enormously positive impact” on cricket at local, national and international level.
 
“Sir John was a former player, administrator and president within Cricket Wellington; he was a long-serving chairman of NZC and a hugely-admired director of the ICC,” recalled Mr Barclay.
 
“That he was so highly respected in all these environments speaks volumes of the character of the man.
 
“He has headed some of the most successful and far-reaching projects for both NZC and the ICC – the legacy from which continues to serve us admirably today, and will do for the foreseeable future.”
 
Tributes for Sir John have continued to stream in since his death on Tuesday.
 
ICC Chairman Shashank Manohar noted Sir John’s outstanding work for the ICC and said: “The sport has lost one of its most committed servants.”
 
ICC chief executive Dave Richardson said Sir John was one of the “most popular and respected cricket administrators who cared deeply about the sport. He leaves behind a very strong legacy.”
 
And NZC chief executive David White said, “much of the respect New Zealand Cricket has at ICC level can be attributed to Sir John’s great work as an ICC delegate and a very influential board member.”
 
NZC board member Martin Snedden (who was chief executive of the organisation during part of Sir John’s chairmanship) and Mr Barclay will attend Sir John’s funeral in Wellington today.
