Familiar foes for ICC semi-final

The BLACKCAPS take on the most familiar of adversaries as they look to secure a place in the ICC Champions Trophy final.

Stephen Fleming’s side face Australia in the semi-finals at the PCA Stadium in Mohali with the BLACKCAPS seeking to reclaim the trophy after qualifying from Group B.

Ricky Ponting’s world champions are aiming for a first-ever Champions Trophy victory after topping Group A by defeating hosts India.

BLACKCAPS all-rounder James Franklin had already earmarked Ricky Ponting’s side as the team to beat.

Speaking before the Champions Trophy, he said: “Australia, as we all know, has set the benchmark in world cricket for probably the past 10 years.

“They’ve got an extremely strong unit and an extremely experienced unit as well, so they’ll be tough to beat.”

The teams meet again in the triangular series in Australia in January, with the Chappell-Hadlee Series concluding both teams’ ICC Cricket World Cup preparations.

“It’s a massive six months,” Franklin added. “Hopefully by the end of it we’ll have a couple of trophies in the cabinet.”

The two nations have met 100 times previously in ODIs since their first encounter in 1973. Australia won that encounter by seven wickets at Carisbrook.

Since then, the BLACKCAPS have won 27 of those games, with the Australians winning another 69.

The last two of those games, in the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, were perhaps the best-ever ODIs between the trans-Tasman rivals.

On the back of a narrow one-run defeat in Wellington, the BLACKCAPS eclipsed a massive Australian score to triumph in a historic win.

The winner of the latest meeting will take on either South Africa or 2004 winner West Indies in Mumbai on Sunday, 5 November.
