England wins dead game

England beat the West Indies by three wickets in their dead match at the Champions Trophy.

The West Indies amassed an impressive 272-4 as it started out by taking toll of some poorly-directed England bowling at Ahmedabad.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul was trapped leg before wicket by Jon Lewis for 13 when the score was 35.

However, that united Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo in a fine 174-run stand for the second wicket that was ended in the 43rd over when Gayle was run out for 101 scored from 128 balls. It was his 14th ODI century.

Bravo scored his first and batted through the innings to be 112 not out from 124 balls.

He added 50 with Ramnaresh Sarwan who fell to Sajid Mahmood for 29 off 19 balls, while Mahmood also claimed Brian Lara's wicket for three.

Mahmood ended with 2-44 from his seven overs while Lewis proved the most economical of the attack with 1-35 from 10 overs.

England made a rollicking start in reply as it put on 82 in 12 overs before Andrew Strauss was bowled by Gayle for 50.

Ian Bell played an anchor role as an opener while batsmen blasted from the other end. Andrew Flintoff, batting at No.3 hit 25 off 27 balls before he was caught from Gayle's bowling.

Paul Collingwood was caught first ball while Bell was run out by Brian Lara for 50 off 79 balls.

However, Kevin Pietersen stepped in to take control of the run chase by scoring 90 off 86 balls and seeing England home in some comfort with nine balls remaining. Gayle was the only bowler to curtail the scoring rate and bowled his 10 overs at a return of 3-31.
