A disciplined bowling display and some aggressive batting have helped the WHITE FERNS claim a commanding seven-wicket win over Pakistan in the second ICC Women’s Championship (IWC) One Day International in Sharjah.

Teenage leg-spinner Amelia Kerr (3-35) and fellow youngster Hannah Rowe (2-17) were the chief destroyers with the ball, as the hosts failed to make good on their decision to bat first.

Off-spinner Leigh Kasperek (2-31) was also a handful on the used wicket, as was senior quick Lea Tahuhu, who had conceded just 14 runs when she brought the Pakistan innings to a close on 147 in her eighth over.

The reply was swift from the WHITE FERNS, as Sophie Devine (62) and captain Suzie Bates (33) played positively in an 80-run opening stand.

Devine backed up her century in the opening game with another dominant display, reeling off eight fours in her 48-ball 62 - enough to secure her a second consecutive Player of the Match award.

The WHITE FERNS bowlers deserved most of the credit for this win, however, with their accuracy early on ensuring the host’s innings couldn’t gain traction.

In her first game on tour, Auckland Hearts spinning all-rounder Anna Peterson took the new ball and together with speedster Tahuhu tied down the Pakistan openers, conceding just seven runs from the first six overs.

Central Hinds pace-bowler Hannah Rowe would reap the rewards of the early pressure, dismissing Ayesha Zafar for two as part of a wicket-maiden start for the 21-year-old.

Captain Suzie Bates was able to rotate her bowlers from both ends as the Pakistan top order struggled to score freely.

Leigh Kasperek and Katey Martin combined to affect a third run-out in two games, before Bates claimed the big wicket of Nahida Khan for a stubborn 39 from 76 deliveries.

The hosts fought valiantly on the slowing pitch, but couldn’t get their run-rate above three runs-per-over, and they continued to lose wickets.

Rowe returned to trap Pakistan captain Bismah Maroof LBW for 36, before Kerr made the double breakthrough of Iram Javed and Sidra Nawaz first ball - courtesy of a sharp catch at first-slip by Amy Satterthwaite.

Once again experienced all-rounder Sana Mir held firm and her rearguard 31 helped the hosts scratch their way through to 147.

That total was made to look even smaller as Bates and Devine posted another 50-run opening stand, this one coming up inside eight overs.

When both fell with the target in sight, it was left to vice-captain Amy Satterthwaite (25*) and promising batswoman Maddy Green (10*) to finish the job in the 24th over.

The WHITE FERNS will have a well-earned day off tomorrow before gearing up for Sunday’s final ODI of the IWC series.
