Sara McGlashan’s unbeaten 119 was the third highest One-Day score in the Auckland Hearts’ history, and that’s what it took to hand the Canterbury Magicians their first loss in either format all summer.
And this was no close-run thing, the Hearts pulling out a 148-run victory over the frontrunning finalists.
McGlashan’s scurrying century came at better than run-a-ball pace over two and a half hours, and edged tons from Hearts legends Emily Drumm and Rebecca Rolls down the all-time list as she reached three figures for the third time for the Hearts. It bettered her 112 against the Otago Sparks in 2014/15, and is shaded on her record only by 125 against the Blaze in that same rich season.
McGlashan had come in at first drop after the top order powerhouse of Anna Peterson (above) and Lauren Down has put on 47 for the opening wicket, Peterson blasting on to 51 off 63 balls before becoming the second to fall with the score a healthy 116 for two.
Katie Perkins missed out but from there McGlashan and Maddy Green (below) took command, Green finishing with an unbeaten 65 as the Hearts stormed to 277 for three in their 50.
Finding themselves in the unusual situation of being under some pressure, the Magicians then had a rare off day with the bat, Frances Mackay’s 36 the best of the humble scores in reply. Peterson wrapped up a fine all-round day with 3-13 while Arlene Kelly bagged 3-40 as the Hearts simply kept upping the pressure en route to a massive win, keeping themselves well in contention to claim the last available place in the Final — the decider at the same venue the following day, with the Mags out for revenge.
The match was also notable for several milestones:
• It was Magician Rachel Candy’s 150th one-day appearance
• It was McGlashan’s fifth one-day century overall
• McGlashan and Green’s unbeaten 157 partnership equalled the Auckland fourth wicket record against allcomers (equal with Shelly Fruin/Helen Watson v Otago Sparks 2000/01).
• Satterthwaite reached 7000 one-day runs
• Peterson claimed her 50th one-day wicket when she dismissed Kirsty Nation.
