Rain gifts Otago Volts pole position

Wet weather left nothing but smiles on the faces of the Otago Volts as their final-round match with the Devon Hotel Central Stags was abandoned without a ball bowled at University Oval.

The outfield too wet for play, two points apiece for the abandonment saw the HRV Twenty20 defending champions promoted to top spot on the table, with the top team gaining direct entry to the Final.

That left them with a keen interest in the concurrent SKYCITY Northern Knights versus Canterbury Wizards match, the Volts needing the Knights to lose to hold onto the precious top rung. And so it eventuated, as the Wizards picked up a five-wicket win.

The Volts will now meet either the Wizards or Knights at Seddon Park on Saturday, while the luckless Central Stags remain winless at the opposite end of the table. They have one final chance to score a victory in their HRV season when they meet the Auckland Aces at Eden Park on Tuesday.
