Wellington have beaten Northern Districts by 22 runs in their Twenty20 match at the Provincial A tournament in Lincoln.
Wellington set a target of 182 for victory and it proved to be too much for Northern who lost consistent wickets in their chase.
Wellington were put in, but made the most of their opportunity largely thanks to a great display from in-form opener Josh Brodie. Brodie made an unbeaten 73 and formed a valuable partnership with Stephen Murdoch (55*) for the third wicket.
Murdoch went nuts at the end of the innings blasting five fours and four sixes to lift Wellington to 181 for two at the end of their 20 overs.
Northern were going to have to do better with the bat than they had with the ball, but they didn’t get off to a very good start.
Shane Gadson was dismissed early for four, but Michael Dodunski and Brook Hatwell went about reviving Northern’s chances with a 50 run partnership for the second wicket.
Hatwell went on to make 56 from 41 deliveries, but wickets tumbled around him. Nobody could stick with him and eventually he was out in the 17th over.
Brandin Hiini chipped in with 24, but it was too little too late for Northern as they fell to Wellington by 22 runs.
Wellington’s victory was in no small part thanks to a brilliant bowling display from Scott Kuggeleijn who finished with the fine figures of five for 26 from four overs.
