Lincoln tournament hosts the Canterbury Magicians finally got themselves on the 2017/18 Women’s Twenty20 board after sweeping aside the young Central Hinds in Round Three.
Having been sent in, the Hinds struggled to 115 for eight in their allotted overs as Canterbury youngster Olivia McGoverne continued the good form she had shown against some of the same players at last week’s National Under-21 Tournament.
Twenty-year-old McGoverne — also a Canterbury rugby representative — claimed 3-16 with her pace bowling for her maiden three wickets at this level while the Hinds’ top score was just 25 from Kerry Tomlinson in the middle order.
Dismissing opener Jess Watkin early had been key and it was Missy Banks who stopped the dangerwoman in her tracks after she had slammed a quick 22 off just 10 balls.
It would stop the Hinds from capitalising on a fast start — 26 for one after just 14 balls — as big hitter Rebecca Burns struggled to get going before being bowled by Frankie Mackay.
The Magicians then easily chased down their target with seven wickets and more than four overs remaining, Mackay contributing 36 from 35 balls and with Amy Sattherwaite an unbeaten 63 off 40).
The Hinds nonetheless join the Magicians, Sparks and Spirit in a lower table log jam as the four teams to have gone one from three in the season to date, behind runaway leaders Wellington Blaze and the strong Auckland Hearts.
