Magicians win on count back

The Canterbury Magicians have won a thrilling match that went to an eliminator over and then to a count back of sixes in the Twenty20 match against the Northern Spirit at Cobham Oval in Whangarei.

Batting first the Northern Spirit put on 119 with MVP leader Nicola Browne top scoring with an unbeaten 47.  Wendy Horneman was next best with 22 with the Canterbury attack bowling an accurate line and length.

The low total was largely thanks so Magician's spinner Erin Bermingham who was lethal and economical, taking four for 14.

In reply, the Magicians were positive, putting on 35 for the first wicket before a three wickets fell in quick succession to swing momentum back in favour of the home side.

Opener Amy Satterthwaite held the innings together with 50 not out off 52 balls but couldn’t get the strike when required in the final over.

Needing two to win off the last ball Maria Fahey only managed a single, sending the match to an eliminator over.

The ball was handed to the experienced Kate Pulford who delivered a superb over to Satterthwaite and Amber Boyce and only conceded six runs.

Canterbury’s Bermingham was then asked to defend the total against White Ferns Pulford and Browne.  Her first five balls went for six runs meaning Northern need one off the final ball to win but disaster struck and Browne was run out handing the Magicians the win because they hit the only six of the match.
