Magicians cruise to victory

The Canterbury Magicians have dominated the Otago Spark to complete a ten wicket thrashing in their Twenty20 match at Mainpower Oval, Rangiora.

Having run through the Sparks’ top order, the home side were chasing just 81 for victory.  The Magicians opening pair of Amy Satterthwaite (51*) and Janet Brehaut (25*) had few problems though and secured the points in the 15th over.

Sattherthwaite showed all of her experience on the way to yet another half-century, reaching the landmark off 44 balls.

She was ably assisted by Brehaut, who played patiently and rotated the strike to great effect. The pair’s defences were not breached and brough up the winning runs after 15.2 overs.

The hard work had all been done earlier, with the bowling attack rampaging through the Volts’ top-order.

The serious damage was done early, with White Ferns Suzie Bates (3) and Katey Martin (6) both going cheaply.

They managed a short reprieve, with Sarah Tsukigawa (27) and Victoria Abbot (17) putting on 23 for the third wicket. However, when Tsukigawa was dismissed in the eight over the Volts’ went down in to a downward spiral.

Emma Campbell (11*) was the only other batsman to reach double digits, as the visitors were reduced to 80 for nine after 20 overs.

The southern rivals meet again tomorrow in the One Day competition.
