We’ve said it already: Northern Spirit are proving the giant-killers of the women’s 2016/17 season, and they certainly pulled off some magic when they had two of the most dominant batsmen of the domestic game — Canterbury Magicians co-skippers Frances Mackay and Amy Satterthwaite — back in the hutch without scoring.
It was the perfect start for the Northern raiders, but the upset wasn’t to be as the Magicians battled back to maintain their unbeaten record at the mid-point of the One-Day competition — and comfortably at that.
The sight of Satterthwaite being sent back for a golden duck was certainly a turn-up for the books, a brilliant wicket for young Tayla Hollis who watched the catch fly into the hands of Sam Curtis first ball of the second over, off her first delivery.
The Mags were chasing Spirit’s 184/9 set up by 33 at the top from Natalie Dodd and bolstered by a vital unbeaten 72 from Katie Anderson at seven after former WHITE FERNS allrounder Kate Broadmore had made life difficult for the Spirit camp.
Broadmore had dismissed both Curtis and Bernadine Bezuidenhout cheaply to have the Spirit 46 for three before she added the big wicket of Dodd in the 15th over, claiming a useful 3-24, including three maidens, from her 10 overs.

Experienced Broadmore would go on to have a solid all-round day with an unbeaten and composed half century at first drop that ensured the home side stayed on top. Playing the anchor rold, she made a formidable pairing with Erin Bermingham who continued her own exciting season with the bat with a quick 61 from 66 balls as they set up a four-wicket victory, competing the chase in just the 38th over.
