Volts go two from two

Otago Volts defeated Wellington Firebirds by six wicket at University of Otago Oval, Dunedin on 6 December 2017

Scorecard

The Volts are riding high with the Aces at the right end of the points table after making it two from two with a solid first-up win at home.

The competitive southerners produced a comprehensive six-wicket win against the Wellington Firebirds, former Auckland Aces allrounder Shawn Hicks standing out with a career-best knock of 83 not out at first drop.

Anaru Kitchen helped the Volts along with a spectacular, 34-ball 50 while Neil Broom chipped in with a solid 48, but it was the Volts’ bowling attack that had earlier set up the handy win.

The Firebirds had been dismissed for 253, leaving the door open to their hosts to challenge them.

The young pace duo of Jacob Duffy (3-42) and Jack Hunter (3-35) prospered, spinning captain Rob Nicol claimed the crucial wicket of Hamish Marshall, and even Hamish Rutherford chimed in with his maiden Ford Trophy wicket, removing former Volts teammate Michael Bracewell who was caught by Hicks on 58.

The wicket stopped an 81-run stand between Bracewell and unbeaten keeper Devon Conway, before Duffy mopped up the tail in the last over.
