Second ODI: England 194 in 49.2 overs (Edwards 65, Taylor 45; Peterson 4-25 off 7.2) beat the New Zealand White Ferns 104 all out in 36.1 overs (Peterson 21, Broadmore 20; Shrubsole 4-36) by 90 runs at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui.
Satisfaction at dismissing England for just 194 inside 50 overs quickly vaporised at a hot Mount Maunganui today after England substantially lifted their game in the field — the New Zealand White Ferns falling apart with the bat to let a largely lacklustre England back into the Series with an emphatic 90-run victory.

Right-arm medium pacer Anya Shrubsole (4-36) inflicted the major damage for England in her second spell, eviscerating the Ferns with four wickets in the space of five overs — and putting herself on a hat-trick in the process.

Then she yorked the Ferns’ last strong hope in Sophie Devine, knocking Devine’s leg stump to have the Ferns trembling at 82/7 in just the 28th over.
First drop Amy Satterthwaite was perhaps the most unlucky dismissal, chopping down on a full-length Heather Knight delivery that then rolled almost in slow motion backwards onto her stumps to have the Ferns 47/3 in the 16th over.
Earlier, captain Charlotte Edwards had won the toss and led the way for England with 65 at the top, supported by a fluent Sarah Taylor (45) into the 30th over as they racked up a solid, run-a-ball 68-run partnership. They were the backbone of the England innings, with the remainder of the line-up contributing just 69 runs between them.
Crucially, Edwards had stabilised the innings after a nervy start — Morna Nielsen had struck early to remove Heather Knight for 5.

But England struck a bigger blow in payback when they ran out Suzie Bates for no score, the star century-maker from the previous game stranded mid-pitch after a calling disaster in just the third over of the Ferns’ chase.
Anna Peterson takes maiden ODI wicket in breakthrough bag of four
While the hosts never recovered from that rocky beginning, one bright spot was the performance of 24-year-old off-break allrounder Anna Peterson. Playing just her fifth ODI, Peterson went into today’s match never having taken a wicket for the White Ferns — but walked off with a starring 4-25 off 7.2 overs, then top-scored at the death with a game 21.

Peterson picked up her maiden wicket in her first over, the 30th — the partnership-busting breakthrough as Sarah Taylor misjudged a slash over mid-wicket. Peterson then bowled Lydia Greenway for a duck in her next over, got Jenny Gunn with a full toss, and wrapped up the innings in the final over by luring Danielle Hazell into dollying up a catch.
Shrubsole said England’s performance in the field was “exceptional” as they dismissed the White Ferns for 104. With the five-match Series now level at 1-1, the third One-Day International begins 10.30am on Sunday at same venue. Admission is free.
