Canterbury magic douses the Blaze

The Canterbury Magicians' machine kept whirring at Lincoln as they cruised to a second, handy One-Day win against the challenging Wellington Blaze.

The hosts were chasing a solid 217 for seven, set up by a 74-run partnership for the first wicket between Eimear Richardson (39 off 43) and Suzie McDonald (33 off 63).

Both would be stopped by legspinner Erin Bermingham, who followed up Richardson's wicket, caught, with a caught and bowled in her following over.

Bermingham would go on to have her WHITE FERNS teammate Rachel Priest stumped in the 34th over, before adding Rebeecca Burns for a return of 4-49 thanks to a stunning diving catch by Frances Mackay; while captain Amy Satterthwaite took care of her opposing skipper Sophie Devine by bowling her on 18.

Holding the Blaze to 217 for seven, the Magicians then chased down the target in the 48th over with four wickets in hand.

Yesterday's batting heroine Satterthwaite was largely a spectator this time, but her teammates stepped up in her stead at 21/2.

Mackay and Bermingham (43 off 38 balls) would resuscitate the innings with a 75-run stand for the third wicket, then Jacinta Savage (who contributed a patient, unbeaten 40), Rachel Candy (22) and Kirsty Nation (an unbeaten 34) finished the task.

Round five of the Women’s One-Day Competition is on 3 January 2016, with matches at Molyneux Park, Alexandra (Sparks v Hinds); Hagley Oval, Christchurch (Magicians v Spirit); and the Basin Reserve, Wellington (Blaze v Hearts).
