Canterbury complete record win

The Canterbury Wizards have rewritten the record books with the highest One-Day total of 410 for five against the Otago Volts at Aorangi Oval, Timaru.

Central held the previous record of 376 for three, scored against Otago at Pukekura Park in the 1996/97 season.

Rob Nicol and Michael Papps got things moving at the top of the order with a 160 run partnership for the first wicket before Papps was dismissed for 78 off 79 in the 25th over.

Nicol kicked on getting 132 off 108 with 17 boundaries and three sixes.  The platform was set for Peter Fulton who blasted 88 off 61 before Shannan Stewart lashed 55 from 21 to set up the formidable total.

All of the Otago bowlers took a bit of tap with Ian Butler leaking the most runs per over going for 59 from only five.

Otago gave it a nudge with Neil Broom hitting a career best 164 off 130.  Shaun Haig made 46, Craig Cumming 40 and Butler 53 but it wasn’t enough as they fell 39 runs short of the target.

Ryan Burson and Andrew took two wickets but the high scoring match meant all bowling figures looked a bit shabby.

The win puts Canterbury in second spot on the points table after five rounds with Otago languishing in last place.
