Auckland Aces Move Up to Fourth After Victory

The State Wellington Firebirds made 241 after being put into bat by the State Auckland Aces in their State League match at the Eden Park Outer Oval.

The Firebirds found it difficult to get build momentum in their innings with their top order getting starts but no one kicking on.  Matthew Bell and current MVP leader Graham Napier both made 23 with Neal Parlane getting 21.

It was all-rounder James Franklin who made the biggest contribution batting at number five, with 80 off 87 balls.

Auckland opening bowler Daryl Tuffey was on target with three for 32 off his 10 with Rob Nicol chiming in with two for 35.

The Aces went about the chase in workmanlike fashion, reaching the target in the 47th over with three wickets in hand.

Tim McIntosh was again solid at the top of the order sharing a 47 run partnership with new BLACKCAP Martin Guptill before Guptill was dismissed for 19.  McIntosh went on to get 45.

Captain Richard Jones struck 79 in a well paced innings as was supported by Reece Young 31 and Rob Nicol 31.

Left arm spinner Luck Woodcock was again the best performing bowler taking three for 36.  Woodcock is averaging a tick over 19 with the ball this season and moves into second place in the State Shield MVP list and up to third overall.

The win drags the Auckland Aces off the bottom of the table for the first time this year into fourth place, with Wellington Firebirds going down two places to fifth.
